He Wouldn't Stay DownCharley Chase -- still working under his birth name of ""Parrott' at this time; he wouldn't become 'Chase' for another nine years -- was not just a minor Keystone supporting comic at this point. He was a minor Keystone director, given the job of wielding the whip on Ford Sterling, one of Keystone's top three or four comics at this point, a man whose comic personna including a beard like a billy goat and a disposition as attractive. So Chase, who in his time, would get fine performances out of Lloyd Hamilton, Billy West and eventually the Three Stooges, couldn't do much in this one-reeler about a cad who tries to drown Ford and steal his widow for the insurance money. But he gives it a decent effort and there's some good comedy construction about a trundle bed that turns out okay. Love in Armor|Love in Armor|58|1915|tt0005656|R:\Video II\Classic Comedies\Charley Chase|Love in Armor (1915) ** (out of 4) Fair comedy from Keystone has a coward (Charley Chase) afraid to go around the girl (Mae Busch) he loves parents. He ends up losing out on an invite to a party when a con man (Fritz Schade) hires two men to attack the girl so that he can run to the rescue and make a favorable impression on the parents. This comedy routine of the dorky boyfriend trying to impress the parents must have been going on for at least fifteen-years before this movie was released and it would continue to this day but this here just uses the story to minimum effect and in the end there aren't too many laughs to be had. I think the biggest mistake was keeping Chase out of the picture except for the start and finish. The center portion of the film isn't really strong enough to carry anything and it seems as if they weren't even trying to get any laughs. Busch doesn't make for the best love interest and Schade just doesn't have enough to work with. Even when Chase is on the screen the laughs are pretty weak and low key. The majority of the running time is just a set up for the final couple minutes and this just doesn't do anyone any good. A decent film but the topic has been done much better. Love, Loot and Crash|Love, Loot and Crash|55|1915|tt0005660|R:\Video II\Classic Comedies\Charley Chase|A flustered father seeks a cook for his kitchen, his daughter seeks to elope and a pair of crooks seek to get some loot. Add the Keystone cops and stir vigorously. Peanuts and Bullets|Peanuts and Bullets|57|1915|tt0005875|R:\Video II\Classic Comedies\Charley Chase|While ""Peanuts and Bullets"" is no great comedy, compared to the typical slapstick film of the time being produced by Keystone, this one is a bit better than average. It still has a lot of the usual mindless slapstick and violence of such a film but it also features Charley Chase in one of his earliest leading roles--well before he became famous. Charley is broke and hungry. Much of the film consists of him devising various ways to steal fruit from a vendor operating his cart outside his apartment. In addition, he's smitten with a girl (Mae Busch) but so is everyone. So how can he get food and the girl? I must admit this is not the most sophisticated comedy--but frankly, for 1915, that's pretty typical. Bonking, exploding bullets and the like are pretty much what you'd find in any comedy then--and this is no different than the norm. Not bad, not great but still funny today. By the way, you might be shocked to see it, but it was NOT unusual to see black characters played by white folks in makeup like you see in this film. Pretty weird but at least the black character was not played in an overtly offensive manner. Rent Jumpers, The | 1915 | Ford Sterling | Comedy,Short | 6.1 (34 votes) | 14 | 20211228 |

Lucky Leap, AFritz Schade as a fat grocery boy is no Roscoe Arbuckle. In what is, even for Keystone, an exceptionally stupid slapstick comedy,, which turns out halfway through, rather unexpectedly, to be a western, everybody knocks each other for no apparent reason, except that Schade and Chase are rivals for the hand of the store-owner's daughter, while two thieves go off with the safe. Caretaker's Daughter, TheNext up is one of my favorite Chases, ""The Caretaker's Daughter"" (1925). In fact, I laughed so much that I rewound my DVD and played it again. I laughed so much the second time, that ? you guessed it! ? I played it yet again. And the following night, I ran it a fourth time! So why isn't everyone as rapt in this movie as I am? Charley pulls such inimitable expressions of frustration and surprise and his timing is so impeccably polished; plus he's given such wonderful support by George Siegmann (any movie with George Siegmann is a must-see movie), Symona Boniface (as Siegmann's wife), Katherine Grant (Charley's wife ? now there was a comic talent that Hollywood hardly ever used to advantage), James Parrott (the caretaker ? a brilliant comedy writer as all Laurel and Hardy fans will readily testify), William J. Kelly (a charismatic stage actor), and last and also least as far as importance to the plot goes ? except of course for a really neat fade-out ? James Finlayson. When you compare the Chase two-reelers to other Roach shorts, you can see they were produced on a really top-budget by supremely gifted directors like Leo McCarey. So why doesn't everyone like ""The Caretaker's Daughter?"" I think a person's reaction has far more to do with how the movie is presented than the movie itself. Is the print attractive to look at, is it projected at the right speed, and above all, is it accompanied by a really accomplished musical score ? not just canned music but preferably timed, scored and played specifically for this movie? In this case of the Chase shorts, the DVD manufacturers have really excelled themselves by hiring Don Kinnier, a really on-the-ball musician whose score is not only most foot-tappingly pleasant to listen to, but really augments the mood, the action, the laughs of every minute of this wonderful short of shorts, ""The Caretaker's Daughter"". | 1925 | Leo McCarey | Comedy,Short | 7.3 (83 votes) | 20 | 20211228 |

Fighting FluidBack when prohibition was in effect in the 1920s and early 1930s, it was very common to see comedies use bootleg as a catalyst for comedy situations, and many use drunkenness as a way to generate laughs. See Laurel and Hardy's excellent short ""Blotto."" This isn't surprising, since seeing people do forbidden, alluring things and, often, make fools of themselves in the process, is always a mine for comedy. | 1925 | Leo McCarey | Comedy,Short | 6.9 (34 votes) | 10 | 20211228 |

Skip The MalooThis is a very funny sound short for Charlie Chase, playing the Duke of Chasewick, but hired by Dell Henderson to play himself, and disabuse his wife and daughter of any fondness for nobility. Charley gets into a very funny fight at the beginning of this short, and has some lovely support, not only from a young Julie Bishop as Henderson's daughter, but also uninhibited silent comedy pro Gale Henry. James Parrott directs this one, and Charley always seems a little more charming under his brother's direction. The whole thing turns into a bit of a series of revenge on Henderson as Charley leads them in a game of follow the leader. Good physical comedy makes this a fine short comedy -- standard for Charley and not to be missed if the chance arises. | 1931 | James Parrott | Comedy,Short | 7.0 (31 votes) | 21 | 20211228 |

Sittin' PrettyCharley Chase starred in a series of one-reel comedies as ""Jimmie Jump"" before his better-known series of twenty-minute two-reelers, and most of them were little comedy gems in miniature. This is one of the funniest of these. In a variation on a formula that would work often for Chase, farcical complications proceed from incredible circumstances, and here we have a beginning gag premise that is hilarious in its goofiness -- the problems caused by a thief who steals Jimmie's car (he removes the steering wheel as a precaution, but the thief has brought his own!) and insists that Jimmie prove it his his. | 1924 | Leo McCarey | Comedy,Short | 7.2 (51 votes) | 14 | 20211228 |

La Senorita De ChicagoWith the coming of sound to motion pictures, the universality of the medium was lost. Pantomime was downgraded, and speech upgraded, and changing language was no longer a matter of replacing titles. For a few years, the studios produced versions of their films in several languages, often with different casts. For Hal Roach, with his star comedians, it was not such an easy proposition. He could replace almost all the cast, but people came to see Laurel & Hardy in any language, and likewise Charley Chase. So he starred these comedians in foreign-language productions of their own movies, and to increase his profits, would fill out the length with songs, variety acts.... in effect, lengthening them from short subjects to features. | 1931 | James Parrott | Comedy,Short | 7.4 (12 votes) | 0 | 20211228 |

Forgotten SweetiesThis Charley Chase short comedy from Hal Roach was the last of the films I watched on the ""American Slapstick"" DVD collection. In the one, Chase lives across on the same apartment floor as his old sweetheart but they just found out about that and their spouses are none too thrilled about it! By the way, Anita Garvin-known to me usually as a Laurel and Hardy foil-plays Chase's wife. I'll just stop there and just say how consistently funny most of the short is especially near the end when Charley paints faces on his feet! (Watch it if you're curious to what I'm referring to.) The director was James Parrott, Chase's brother. So on that note, I highly recommend Forgotten Sweeties. | 1927 | James Parrott | Comedy,Short | 7.2 (39 votes) | 20 | 20211228 |

Married to OrderWhile I totally disagree with one reviewer who described Charley Chase as unfunny, in this film he certainly is. It's a shame, as I suspect the other reviewer must have only seen a few Charley Chase duds and assumed the guy wasn't funny. Films like MIGHTY LIKE A MOOSE and WHAT PRICE GOOFY? are very good Chase films, so he COULD be really funny given good material. Unfortunately, in this film he's given absolutely nothing. Even the inclusion of the usually good Oliver Hardy as a foil isn't any help because the basic premise (boy wants to marry girl but girl's father thinks the boy is a wuss) and the gags are so poor. It's a shame, as I really wanted to love this film but couldn't. | 1920 | Charley Chase | Comedy,Short | 5.8 (58 votes) | 16 | 20211228 |

Just a Real Good CarI was initially much interested in this little film where Charley/Jimmy Jump is a car salesman who takes an unruly family of prospective buyers for a picnic in the woods because I thought it might have been made specially for Pathex but it in fact it is just the central episode from the film Just a Minute. | 1924 | Hal Roach | Comedy,Short | nan | 3 | 20211228 |
